The 19-year-old defender could be given the chance to earn a professional deal at Elland Road after captaining New Zealand during the forthcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup, which begins in Canada on June 30.

Pelter, who was born in Barrow-in-Furness but emigrated from England at the age of 10, plays for Kiwi side Canterbury United but is approaching the end of his contract and now wants an opportunity in English football.

The centre-back caught the eye of United's scouts and is understood to have been recommended to Dennis Wise's backroom staff at Thorp Arch.

The timing of his trial would depend on the length of New Zealand's involvement in the U-20 World Cup, a tournament which has witnessed many emerging talents in the past.
