Kelly Calls Time On Ireland

Kelly has told Republic manager Brian Kerr that he does not want to be considered for selection any more.

He made his Ireland debut against Russia in 1994 and went on to win 52 caps, scoring two goals. He also played in the 1994 and 2002 World Cup finals.

He played his last international game in Mick McCarthy's final game in charge, against Switzerland in a 2-1 loss in October 2002.

Kelly pulled out of the Irish squads at the beginning of the year because of a shin splint problem. He was also unavailable for the June clashes with Albania and Georgia.

Kelly started his career as a striker with Home Farm before moving to Leeds where he was converted into a full-back, forming a great partnership on the right with Gordon Strachan.

Kelly held the right-back position going into the first game of the 2002 World Cup before being moved into midfield to replace the injured Jason McAteer, a position he made his own over the course of the tournament.

Kelly has struggled to make the squad since as he has fallen behind Tottenham's Stephen Carr and Liverpool's Steve Finnan in the pecking order.

Even though he has been plagued with injuries lately, Kelly has still managed to make 302 league appearances for The Whites and hopes to make a good few more now his international career is at an end.
