Johnson: We Did It For The Manager

Last updated : 06 October 2003 By Kevin Markey
In what he considered his best performance for The Whites Johnson played on the left-hand side of midfield, a position he occupied sometimes at Crewe.

Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Johnson said: "The gaffer has had a scandalous amount of stick in the media over the past week.

"He has a tough job and that wasn't made easy by our performances against Leicester and Everton.

"It was important we went out and did it for the manager against Blackburn.

"We've all been a bit low because there's been a lot of pressure on the manager. On Saturday, it was important to get back to football and to winning ways.

"I haven't played that many games so it was probably my best. Of course, the goals make a difference, but it's just nice to be playing.

"I didn't play well at Everton last week, I was brought off at half-time and it was important I did well against Blackburn.

"I played on the left a few times at Crewe. With Batts and Jody in the middle we were a bit more solid.

"That gave me a chance to get forward. It worked out well.

"I've never scored two before. When the second one went in it was a great feeling.

"I had another chance with a header in the second half. I don't know what I'd have done if that had gone in. I think I would have taken the ball home there and then! The most important thing was the performance and to get a win.

"Everyone knows things haven't been good enough. It's been a tough week, but thankfully we got down to the football again and played really well.

"Manchester United are next up (Oct 18th) and that's a massive game. If we show the same commitment who knows what might happen.

"We've got two weeks now and then we have some really big games coming up. If we'd lost on Saturday we'd really have been down and the pressure would have been on."
