Invitation Side Win In Chief's Homecoming

Last updated : 12 June 2005 By Kevin Markey

The match was played between a 'SA Invitation XI' and a 'Radebe All Star XI'. The Invitation side was coached by former Bafana mentor, Clive "The Dog" Barker and the All Stars was coached by legend Jomo Sono.

The early chances fell to the Radebe XI, with Alfred Phiri coming close after being put through by Doc Khumalo, while Steven Pienaar had a long range shot for the Invitation team in the 24th minute.

The Radebe XI had many of the players from the 1996 African Cup of Nations winning team in the side, including striker Mark Williams. The game was goalless at half time.

The second half saw the teams changed around, with many substitutes being made, with the Chief also switching to the Invitation Team.

Seven minutes into the second half Benson Mhlongo pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the area and fired home with his left foot for the Invitation side.

Zimbabwean Benjamin Mwaruwari equalized 15 minutes later after a good exchange between John "Shoes" Mosheou and Thabo "Tsiki Tsiki" Mooki.

In the 80th minute Bafana striker Katlego Mphela put the Invitation side ahead with a header, but just a minute later Mwaruwari brought the scores level again.

But Mphela scored the winner 5 minutes from time when he struck with a shot which flew into the top corner of the net.
