Club staff tried to scrub the offending letters off during the morning but fans arriving ahead of the 12.15pm kick-off could still see the outline.
A minute's applause was held for Bremner and respected by both sets of fans but Wise was furious with the handiwork of the vandals.
He said: "I am not too happy with what they did to his statue. I don't think it was called for, their behaviour was not very nice. You don't disrespect a player of that calibre.
"It was disappointing that some idiot can decide to do something like that. People like that are just idiots, I think they are better off away from football.
"But the applause was fantastic. He deserved it."
