The 27-year-old Helguson has a year to run on his current contract and has been offered a new three-year one but he is believed to be unhappy that the terms are no better than his current deal (around £4k a week).

The striker is valued by Watford at £1.5m but they may have to settle for around half that because he can go on a free transfer next summer.

Meanwhile, the hunt is on to sign Wrexham's prolific Spanish striker Ugarte.

Leeds, Cardiff and Sheffield United are all believed to be interested in the 24-year-old.

The former Real Sociedad striker scored 22 goals for Wrexham last season although the Welsh side were relegated to League Two after a 10-point deduction for going into administration.
