Gray: Smith Channelling His Aggression

A yellow card against Blackburn today will result in a two-match ban. Smith has been one booking away from suspension since he picked up his ninth yellow card against Arsenal in the FA Cup in January, which suggests a massive improvement in temperament.

If he goes without further punishment from referee Steve Dunn today then it will have marked his 11th game in a row without a caution.

"I think Alan is working hard at this aspect of his game and knows what he has got to do," said Eddie Gray in the Yorkshire Post. "He needs to be playing at his very best on the football field. He is one of our big, big players and we need him to be in the team from now until the end of the season.

"Alan is no use to anyone sat in the stands. He knows what is required of him and I think he is mature enough to handle it. It is a mixture of looking at himself, getting more experience and not letting people wind him up.

"Unfortunately, with someone like Alan, with the reputation he has got, that has happened in the past but he has that little bit more experience now. We are getting better performances from him and he is playing with a lot of discipline.

"He is a more mature character now and that helps him, especially with the type of player that he is. You will never lose that fiery side to his nature but he is channelling his aggression in the right ways now."

A victory today will bring them level with Blackburn and may be enough to lift The Whites clear of the bottom three for the first time since October.
