Leeds chief Peter Risdale has responded quickly to the weekend speculation that suggested Manchester United were considering a £30million swoop for Rio Ferdinand.

Ferguson is looking to strengthen his defence and sources close to United believe that the Old Trafford outfit are trying to cause some unrest to tempt Ferdinand who said he was "flattered" that the Red Devils were apparently interested.

"This shows the silly season really is upon us," blasted Ridsdale.

"It's a total load of rubbish. Absolutely no contact has been made between us and any other club, regarding Rio Ferdinand."

However, the reports didn't say Ferguson has made a bid, just that he was considering a bid and Ridsdale wouldn't be able to confirm or deny that would he.
