Showunmi, 27, scored six goals in 28 appearances for Leeds after signing from Bristol City in the summer of 2008 when Gary McAllister was in charge.
He missed the second half of last season after suffering a blood clot on his lung and struggled to force his way back, with his last start coming in a Carling Cup win over Darlington in August when he scored the winner.
