The defender picked up a rib injury in training last week and missed Saturday's defeat at Aston Villa.
United caretaker manager Eddie Gray said: "Michael's got a problem with his ribs and the physio said he could out for a few weeks."
Gray is without Lucas Radebe for tomorrow's game with Wolves and Eirik Bakke is a also a doubt with a calf strain.
