However, with chants of "Time to go" booming around the stadium at the final whistle, the Leeds boss admitted to being "back to square one" after seeing his side slump to their fourth successive Elland Road defeat.
"We didn't defend well from the first whistle," said Venables.
"There's not a lot to say to the players at the moment because everyone is down and really disappointed. It's not really constructive to talk about things at this time.
"I felt we had turned a corner a bit, but we are now back to square one."
