Davies Motivation For United

Not only is the play-off semi-final second leg at Deepdale a case of winner-takes-all, but the actions and words of Preston boss Billy Davies will act as an inspiration to Leeds in Lancashire tonight.

Davies has done enough talking for both camps since the play-off meeting between the two sides was confirmed eight days ago.

Ahead of the clash, the former Motherwell boss boasted how little money he had spent compared to Blackwell and how great an achievement it was for his side to reach the play-offs for a second year in succession.

On Friday, Davies took things a step further. He was successful in slowing the tempo of the game shortly before half-time, during a sustained spell of Leeds pressure, when he brought about an end to the multi-ball system – where ball boys are encouraged to get the ball back into play straight away – by kicking another ball onto the pitch.

Referee Phil Crossley, following the letter of the law, duly brought an end to the system, but failed to punish Davies.

The theme continued in the second half when, making substitutions, the Preston players took an age to leave the field. Gamesmanship or time-wasting? Still no punishment from Crossley.

Davies exchanged words with fourth official Carl Boyeson, United head coach John Carver and even the fans behind the dugout in the John Charles Stand, and a general air of unpleasantness lingered on Friday.

That tension increased after the game when, following the briefest of insincere handshakes with Blackwell, Davies ran to the Preston fans punching the air in celebration before announcing that he felt his side were as good as on their way to the Millennium Stadium.

Victory would be all the sweeter for Leeds tonight, but it will be even more so coming at the expense of Davies.
