Can Blackwell Take This Club Forward (Part Two)

Last updated : 10 June 2006 By Jim Stockwell
Me and my wife, until the season just ending, had been season ticket holders for 30 years and my two sons ticket holders for 15 years but we didn't renew them last term due to two things:

a) the new ticket prices and that fact we had to move seats away from our family stand central position, 16 rows from the front.

b) we were fed up watching over paid, under performing plays. The team and performances were poor and their effort couldn't justify our support any longer.

We didn't go to one match all season. I watched them on television and read the reports and to be honest they did better than I thought that they would but this could be because there are few really decent teams in the Champioship.

At one point they had a chance of automatic promotion but this challenge dropped off at the same time when Blackwell was offered the 3-year contract.
I had seen the team on television and the performances didn't look good but Leeds kept picking up points. Leeds got into the play-offs.

I watched both matches on television against Preston, drawing at Elland Road then against, what I and everyone else thought won at Preston, getting into the play off Final.

Leeds still didn't look good but they were one step from the Premiership. After suffering watching an under performing side get relegated we thought that we should rally support Leeds at Cardiff.

With not being members I queued that Wednesday morning firstly to become members (4 persons) and then in the ticket queue (4 tickets), 9 long hours in the sun at a cost of £362.

6am Saturday we set off 235 miles to Cardiff, parked at Ninian Park (£10 park and ride) got absolutely drenched getting to the ground. £5 for the programme.

Sat in our places with the 30 odd thousand other Leeds fans, this was going to be our day, any doubt that we had that Leeds wouldn't play well were diappearing as kick off time got nearer.

We saw the players in the tunnel. Watford players keen to get on the pitch, looking full of fight and confidence then we saw the Leeds players faces and ''Oh my god, what had we done'' they looked like lambs going to the slaughter, no confidence, no fight.

The team selection for a final was wierd, why play two slow, old timers like Gregan and Butler in the centre of defence when Kilgallon has pace to catch the Watford forwards and he has been our most consistant central defender?

Pugh, Richardson or even Stone could have played at left back. Then we played one striker alone up front, crazy in a match like this.

Even when we were losing Blackwell didn't change things with any confidence. Douglas did nothing all the match but he wasn'T replaced, substitutions were poor, I suppose he had too many under performers and not allowed enough substitutes.

We and the rest of the Leeds fans were gutted, we all new that Leeds really had a poor side but for them to save their worst performance for the final was criminal.

Some Leeds fans were saying that why would these players want to get into the Premiership when they would probably be sold off due to them not being good enough, they liked the cosy life and pay Leeds gave them in the lower division.

Other fans said that Leeds had rallied there fans now all they had to do was to put in a good peformance to make the non season ticket buyers like us renew and start going to the matches again.

But instead Leeds showed how good they really are - absolutely hopeless. The team has under achievers like Miller, Douglas, Bakke and Healy, let those on loan return to their clubs the other sell them for what they can get.

Old timers like Sullivan, Kelly, Butler, Blake and Crainey who should pack up. Players such as Pugh, Richardson, Einersson, Walton and Harding who would be better in the lower divisions to match their skills.

Hulse, Cresswell, Lewis, Stone and Derry need to prove their worth and earn their keep. Kilgallon and Beckford should be the starting point for the new Leeds team that have pace, heart and talent then they would be worth supporting.

Blackwell has brought lots of players to Leeds and still his team is poor, they should not have offered him a 3-year deal because he isn't a good enough manager for Leeds United.

His team is poor, his tactics are poor and he has no idea of running a good side. Leeds had the ideal stage to get back on top, a massive following to Cardiff to show all what they could really do and £30 million cash injection for getting into the top flight plus all the extra season ticket sales but they blew it.

Leeds have a history of blowing the big occasion Bayern Munich in the European Cup Final in 1975, Sunderland in the FA Cup Final 1973, Aston Villa in the League Cup Final 1996, Valencia in the Champions League Semi Final 2001 and now this.

Did the Cardiff match make us want to renew our tickets for next season? Did we see some decent football to justify renewal? Did we see commitment for the future? Did we hell!!

We saw the same team that lost to Rotherham, Crewe, Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday. No improvement, no commitment, lousy tactics and underperforming second rate players and manager and we will not be renewing any tickets until this shower get the boot and we have a manager and team worthy of our support.
