Caldwell, who joined Leeds during the January transfer window, has now agreed to cut short his stay at Elland Road after their relegation.
The Scottish international made 13 appearances for Leeds, scoring one goal. The 23-year-old scored his one goal in the 2-1 win over Blackburn.
His long-term future is uncertain as his contract at Newcastle expires in the summer and he is expected to move on.
