Burnley 2 Leeds 0

Jermaine Beckford - the pick of the Leeds players - and Tresor Kandol were the main culprits, as former Whites wideman Andy Gray and Ade Akinbiyi gave clinical demonstrations of the striker's art.

Despite the fact boss Dennis Wise has been unable to sign any players during the summer, with the Football League withholding Leeds's golden share after the club went into administration just before the end of last term, the visitors were still able to field a relatively strong side.

Frazer Richardson, Eddie Lewis, Jonathan Douglas, Alan Thompson, Matt Heath, trialist David Prutton and Ian Westlake were all named in the starting line-up, with Kandol and Beckford up front, and Hull target Richard Cresswell on the bench.

There was no swift reunion for Robbie Blake, two weeks after his £250k return to Burnley from Leeds, as he sat out his third game with a thigh strain for the Clarets.

Burnley had the first sight of goal when Northern Ireland international striker Kyle Lafferty cut inside from the left an unleashed a fierce 25-yarder which keeper Scott Loach parried and then gathered at the second attempt.

But Leeds responded well and had two chances in a minute. First Beckford sent an overhead kick straight at Gabor Kiraly in the Clarets goal, before Kandol was played through only to wastefully drag his effort wide of the far post.

Burnley took the lead, however, after 15 minutes when referee Graham Salisbury awarded a penalty for handball against Heath, and former Leeds frontman Gray, son of Frank, nephew of Eddie, stepped up to fire home his fourth goal in five pre-season games, despite Loach going the right way.

Going behind failed to dampen Leeds' energetic start though, and Prutton arrowed a shot at Kiraly from 25 yards, before an audacious chip from Thompson floated just over the top.

Burnley pieced together their best football of the half midway through when Chris McCann's crossfield pass was headed on by Stephen Foster, and Albanian international Besart Berisha flicked the ball over Lewis, only for Loach to come out and claim.

There was a blow for Wise's plans when American Lewis, playing at left-back, was forced off with a knock just after the half-hour to be replaced by Ben Parker.

And United were nearly two down moments later as Clarets skipper Steven Caldwell, a popular figure during a loan spell at Elland Road a couple of years back, had a free header saved from Berisha's free-kick.

Beckford was denied an equaliser by the inside of the far post when his cross-shot was deflected and looped over Kiraly, with the Leeds fans at the other end - who sang their disapproval of chairman Ken Bates throughout - initially thinking the ball had gone in.

There was another close shave for the Clarets when Thompson's free-kick drifted narrowly wide and then, on the stroke of half-time, the lively Beckford lashed a fierce volley just beyond the far post.

Burnley made six of their available seven substitutions at the break, while Leeds retained the same XI that ended the first period.

One of Steve Cotterill's changes almost doubled the Clarets' advantage, Akinbiyi wriggling free and fizzing a shot across the face of Loach's goal and just beyond the far post.

But Leeds soon hit back, only for Kandol to waste two more great opportunities to level.

First, Parker's long ball over the top sent the marksman clear, but a heavy touch allowed Brian Jensen chance to come out and smother his effort. Then seconds later an indentical opportunity arose from the other flank when Richardson's raking pass gave him a sight of goal, but Jensen was equal to his tame effort.

And Leeds were made to pay eight minutes after the restart when Foster's first-time cross was poked in by Akinbiyi at the far post for his third goal in pre-season.

Heath then made a vital intervention to prevent Gray making it 3-0 from Foster's knockdown.

Wise handed youngster Fabian Delh opportunity to impress with just over half-an-hour to go, replacing Westlake, and he was immediately involved, rifling a volley into Jensen's midriff.

With 20 minutes remaining, Wise made a treble change, as Douglas, Prutton and Thompson were replaced by Jonathan Howson, Seb Carole and Curtis Weston. Weston quickly carved out an opening for the wasteful Kandol, who shot at Jensen's legs.

Jay Rodriguez replaced Gray for Burnley with 18 minutes remaining, while Rob Bayley came on for Richardson four minutes later.

But United were unable to claw their way back into the game, despite an improved performance on their three outings in Germany and the Czech Republic.
