The Leeds midfielder made his long awaited England debut in the friendly game against Portugal at Villa Park last month and voiced his disappointment at not being retained for the two upcoming Euro 2004 qualifiers.

"Obviously I`m very disappointed not to be named in the squad," he said.

"I was surprised. I suppose all I can do now is try and play well for Leeds and hope something will come from that."

England coach Sven Goran Eriksson says that he has left Lee Bowyer out of the squad because of his poor form.

"That is the only reason that he has been left out.

"I am sure he will play better in the future and he might be picked next time," Eriksson said on sky sports news.

"I think Lee Bowyer's a good man and a good boy. The only reason is that I think he can play better than he is doing at the moment, so I have chosen other players for that reason."
