UEFA charged Bowyer after reviewing video evidence of the match at Elland Road, when Leeds went out of the competition, losing 2-1 on aggregate to the Spaniards.

However, Bowyer will have to wait and see what punishment UEFA inflict on him when the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body hold a meeting.

A UEFA statement said: "UEFA has instigated disciplinary proceedings against the Leeds United midfield player Lee Bowyer for unsporting behaviour in last Thursday's UEFA Cup match against Malaga."

Bowyer faces the prospect of a lengthy suspension and a possible fine, but any suspension will only affect club games in Europe.
