Assistant Dave Bassett let slip the New Year's Day target last week and Wise reluctantly conceded: "It was a target I put to them. Are they capable? We'll see. You have to challenge them and keep them on their toes."

Wise has always played down the Whites' promotion possibities after the Football League's 15-point deduction for breaching rules on administration, but United have lost only two league matches and are now fifth in the table, just four points behind leaders Swansea.
