Birch: Six Weeks To Achieve Sale

Last updated : 06 December 2003 By Kevin Markey

Speaking in The Sun Birch said: "I’m on a rollercoaster ride that has taken me to both ends of the soccer spectrum.

"When the last transfer window was open back in the summer I was at Chelsea and we were spending £115m on players.

"When the next window opens in January I shall probably be spending absolutely nothing here.

"I was instrumental in bringing Roman (Abramovich) to Chelsea and I do have a sense of pride when I see how well they are doing.

"I handled 13 transfers in six weeks there. And they were the kind of transfers that a chief executive at another club may only handle once in his life.

"It was extraordinary, one big whirl of fast cars, speedboats, private jets, luxury yachts and buzzing off to places like San Tropez, Madrid and Rome.

"It was a wonderful time of my life and I will never forget it.

"It was so exciting for me. It was a thrill to be involved at the time Roman came into the club.

"Of course, it was disappointing to leave, but everybody at Chelsea treated me honourably and there are no hard feelings.

Birch said that he was hopeful of "salvaging something from the wreckage" of Leeds' perilous financial situation and revealed that he is expecting at least four bids for the club.

"We have six weeks to achieve a sale, no longer.

"The bond holders have expressed their faith in us to produce a solution and the £4m freed-up gives us the breathing space to get a result for them. We are hopeful that we’ll find a buyer in time.

"I want to see this club return to the pinnacle of the Premiership and be challenging again for the Champions League.

"We have to put in place a three to five-year plan to achieve our goal. And it will involve either the building of a new state-of-the-art 50,000-capacity stadium or the redevelopment of Elland Road."
