Bates: Long Memories

Bates said: "There is a saying that we've got long memories, and we'll remember those clubs who may want help in the future.

"More than one club has told us quite bluntly that they voted for the 15 points because they knew it would handicap us in our efforts to get back to the Championship, not because they saw the rights or wrongs of the situation."

Leeds' competitors reacted with relief to the news that the club's appeal had failed.

Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan, whose club are now one win away from automatic promotion, said: "My feeling is that common sense has prevailed."

Carlisle United owner Fred Story added: "We backed the League from the start and they have come up trumps. There is no need to gloat about it."
