The former England star was left out of the squad for United's opening weekend 2-2 draw with title hopefuls Newcastle United. Barmby is determined to bounce back.

He said: "From a personal point of view, it was disappointing not to be involved.

"I'm a Leeds player and I signed for four years. I enjoy being at the club tremendously. I'm determined to see out my four-year deal. I need to keep working hard and hopefully the manager will call on me.

"I have been in this position at other clubs but have come back and trained hard and tried hard in the reserves. I would never want to leave Leeds."

Barmby was impressed with his colleagues display against the Magpies.

He said: "The doom and gloom merchants had their knives out about Leeds as usual.

"But you look at the 11 players who started and they were fantastic, as were the people who came off the bench.

"It was a great performance against a very good side tipped to do something this season. We were unlucky not to get three points."
