Bakke Driving Leeds Crazy

The Norway international was banned for two years in Britain in May but claims to have been mis-informed that his Norwegian driving licence was still valid.

The day had already began badly for the player after he was told that he may need an operation.

Bakke, who faces up to three months on the sidelines and possible surgery after suffering a knee injury, was pictured heading away from former club Sogndal following their 4-0 victory over Bryne yesterday.

Alongside him in the passenger seat was Norway coach Nils Johan Semb.Bakke told Norwegian newspaper VG that he had checked with Roger Johannessen, a police officer he knows, to see if he was legally sound to get behind the wheel and was given the go-ahead.

However, Norwegian Roads official Sonja Sporstol confirmed an offence had been committed.

"When a person loses his licence in another country, he or she is not allowed to drive here in Norway either," she told VG.

"Yes, it is natural for us to hear from Bakke himself what has happened. He will be called in for questioning within the next few days," added lawyer Rune Stenstrom, of the Sogndal police district.

Bakke's story has been confirmed by Johannessen, a police station manager in Halden, who admitted that he had made the error.

"I told him he could drive since he still had his Norwegian driver's licence and the police in Norway had not received a request to take that licence from him," said Johannessen.

Johannessen has also pleaded his innocence after insisting he had asked lawyers at the Halden station before he spoke to Bakke.

"I still have my Norwegian licence and I am allowed to drive in Norway," Bakke said when challenged.

"I'm just sticking to the rules and regulations. It is not like I am driving in England."
