He boosted his prospects with a rare headed goal in the 25th minute but blotted his copybook by conceding a 78th minute penalty, Andy Reid drilling the spot-kick past Neil Sullivan to equalise.

It let Forest off the hook and Joe Kinnear's men have now drawn all their four matches this season and are undefeated in their last 12.

Leeds looked calm and assured in defence and seemed set for their third clean sheet in four games until the Republic Of Ireland international's equaliser.

Former Leicester midfielder Guppy is at Leeds until September and is keen to impress manager Kevin Blackwell who is considering whether to offer him the security of a long-term deal.

After two substitute appearances, Guppy made his first start against Forest and gleefully took his scoring chance when it came along. His first since May 2001.

Frazer Richardson caused Forest problems with his strong and direct running down the right and it was from his cross that slack marking allowed Guppy to head in at the far post.

And Guppy was only a coat of paint away from adding a second just before the break with a swerving 25-yard free-kick.

With Michael Duberry serving a one-match ban, Leeds gave former QPR central defender Clarke Carlisle his debut. Guppy made his first start in place of the injured Lucas Radebe, and Julian Joachim replaced the out-of-touch Michael Ricketts up front.

Forest, who had Wes Morgan replacing Chris Doig, had a big following in a crowd of 31,808 for the first meeting between the sides outside the top flight since 1956.

Forest left-back Alan Rogers was the only 'survivor' from the last game between the teams at Elland Road in April 1999, when Leeds were 3-1 winners.

The visitors had a goal disallowed in the 14th minute when Gareth Taylor headed home Paul Evans' pinpoint cross from the left, but the flag was quickly raised for offside.

Former Southampton left-back Stephen Crainey was twice unfortunate not to score for Leeds. First he saw his curling free-kick spectacularly saved by Paul Gerrard and then he nodded Jermaine Wright's inswinging corner fractionally over the bar.

Forest were stunned by Guppy's goal but they almost equalised when Sullivan had to throw himself to his left to swoop on David Johnson's angled 20-yard drive.

And when Sullivan's punched clearance landed at Evans' feet the midfielder stabbed his shot wide.

However, Forest's passing was ragged and they relied too heavily on the guile of Johnson and the much-sought after Reid.

Taylor nodded straight at Sullivan when Leeds allowed him a free header from Reid's corner but the equaliser arrived in the 78th minute when Guppy was adjudged to have fouled Evans and Reid powered his spot kick to Sullivan's right as Forest, the draw specialists, did it again.
