Norwich City 2 (Hoolahan 45, Murphy 69) 1 Leeds United (Phillips 39)

Leeds United were unable to back up last weekend’s victory against Barnsley as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Ronaldo Vieira had the first chance of the game inside a minute, when he forced Angus Gunn into a decent save from the edge of the area.

James Maddison was next to try his luck, but he could only fire over the crossbar from 20 yards.

In a first half of few chances, Leeds took the lead six minutes before the break.  A Pablo Hernandez free-kick was punched away by Gunn, Ronaldo Vieira then scuffed a volley before the ball fell to Kalvin Phillips who fired home a spectacular effort from 25 yards.

The Whites could have doubled the lead less than a minute later, Kemar Roofe broke into the box from the right, but could only fire into the side netting.

Ezgjan Alioski then tried his luck from distance, but his well struck effort hit the back of Timm Klose and deflected wide for a corner.

Norwich levelled the scoring on the stroke of half time, through Wes Hoolahan, making his last Canaries appearance.  His long range effort deflected off Pontus Jansson, over Peacock-Farrell and in via both posts.

The troublesome Josh Murphy tried to put Norwich ahead, following a counter attack after Samuel Saiz lost possession, but his effort from the left was off target.

The Whites went close ten minutes into the second period, Pablo Hernandez played the ball into Ezgjan Alioski, who shot on the turn from the edge of the area and his attempt wasn’t far over.

At the other end Peacock-Farrell had to be at his best, to deny a James Maddison shot from just inside the Leeds box.

Ricardo Oliveria then had a good chance following a well worked free-kick, but could only fire over, before Hernandez put a lovely cross into the Norwich box at the other end, but neither Alioski or Roofe could poke home.

James Maddison then had two chances, first he saw an effort blocked by Liam Cooper, before the midfielder was denied by Peacock-Farrell following a corner.

Following Maddison’s second effort, Leeds broke up the pitch through Samuel Saiz and he fed Phillips who saw a curling effort denied by Gunn.

Saiz then tested Gunn from distance, but it was the home side who went ahead in the 69th minute, when Murphy was played into the area and his powerful effort got the better of Peacock-Farrell.

Substitute Adam Forshaw almost had an immediate impact with a strike from range, which forced Gunn into a really good save, as Leeds looked to get back into the match.

United again went close eight minutes from time, Roofe did well to get his head on a Hernandez cross, but couldn’t direct his effort on target.

Saiz then saw a stoppage time effort deflect wide as the hosts managed to hold on for the win.
