Harrogate Town 3-0 Leeds United XI

A 12th-minute goal from Darren Dunning and second-half brace from Richard Marshall helped Town defeat a Leeds United team for the first time in their history.

Neil Aspin's side passed the ball well in difficult, hot conditions against a strong Leeds side and he will be looking for more of the same when they host rivals Harrogate Railway on Tuesday night (7.45 ko).

Dunning looked eager to impress from the get go, striking a fierce shot wide of Leeds 'keeper Jonathan Lund within two minutes of the start, after turning well on the left wing and cutting inside.

He found the net less than ten minutes later, tapping the ball into the roof of the net unmarked at the back post after a fine interchange between strike partners Danny Holland and Jamie Smith on the right hand side.

Jim Provett looked sharp in the net for Town, saving well at the feet of Tresor Kandol and moments later diving to his right to deny Tom Elliott.

Leeds had the better of a well-balanced and fast-paced first half, with Kandol testing Provett again from the edge of the 18-yard box and Oliver Hotchkiss sending a dipping shot slightly over the crossbar after 15 minutes.

Ryan Toulson showed nice touches on the right wing, especially in linking up with Holland, and Town's defence held their shape well, led by Justin Whittle and Nathan Peat.

Aaron Hardy, who signed for the club immediately after the final whistle, also looked in good form, including spraying a glorious cross-field pass to Toulson in a move than ended in Holland hitting the ball straight into the arms of the Leeds 'keeper.

'Town could have gone in at the half 2-0 ahead when Matty Young brought the ball down well in the box on 39 minutes after being played through by Dunning. Holland then had another half chance one minute later, heading the ball wide of Lund's left hand post.

Danny Lowe and Michael Roddy came on for Matty Young and Joey Hutchinson for the second half, and even though Leeds commanded the ball well in the midfield, Dunning nearly doubled his tally with an 18-yard curling shot that beat everything except the woodwork.

A minor scuffle took place in the Town penalty box on 55 minutes after Leeds substitute Chris Ovington felt he was unfairly brought down, but the incident affected the visitors more than the hosts.

With the game finely-balanced on the hour mark, Marshall replaced Jamie Smith who had made his claim for a first-team spot with two goals against Ossett Town midweek.

Marshall, who signed for Town this summer in a move from cross-town rivals Railway, netted his first goal for the club on 71 minutes when a well-hit 20-yard strike surprised everyone and crept into the bottom left corner of the net.

Marshall then put the game out of reach less than two minutes later, latching on to Dunning's lob to tap the ball home from a few yards out.

Leeds looked slower in the second half, and rarely threatened in the remaining 15 minutes. Toulson marked Leeds' Ian Westlake out of the game and Provett showed composure and agility in coming out to pluck several menacing crosses out of the air.

Marshall almost had his hat-trick ten minutes from time when he carried the ball into the Leeds United half from a Leeds corner and out-muscled Seb Sorsa before watching his shot trickle agonisingly wide of Lund's right post.
