2016/2017 was a season that began with great hope and anticipation for Leeds United as new manager Garry Monk added some useful looking recruits to an existing squad of young and talented players.

After a difficult start, Leeds battled their way into the top six by November and it looked as if a play-off place was more than likely while a good run in the EFL Cup was only ended at the hands of a young Liverpool side on a marvellous night at Anfield.

In the boardroom, changes were occurring that seemed to suggest a brighter, more stable future and an environment in which the team could continue to flourish.

But things did not all go to plan and a failure to strengthen the squad in January and a calamitous FA Cup exit at non-league Sutton United saw pressure mount on the wafer thin squad.

Going into the final eight games it still looked odds-on that Leeds would be contesting the play-offs but while other teams got stronger Leeds began to fade and ultimately the opportunity was lost.

This is the story of Leeds United throughout the season, on and off the pitch, as seen through the eyes of the author.

It was a season of highs and lows, humour and despair, delight and frustration; a season when the stars almost aligned for Leeds United.
